Question: In the 70s there was a USAF Base in Aiken SC that was a sattelite tracking station what was it exactly....... where was it .......and what happened to it
Answer: I was stationed at Seymour Johnson AFB in the early 70's and never heard of a satellite tracking station or any other facility in Aiken. I googled it and could not find anything on it either. However, I was a B52 pilot who was scheduled to fly a training mission on September 5, 1975. I was taken off the flight so a student pilot could get some flight time. This B52 57-6493 right after air refueling exploded its right wing and crashed right outside Aiken. 4 crewmen escaped without harm and 3 were killed. Sorry I could not give you what you wanted, but every time I hear about Aiken (which I have been to and see as a beautiful city) I get a little misty eyed.
